Frequently Asked Questions

Any premises using manufacturing process where 10 or more workers are employed with power, or 20 or more without power, must obtain a factory licence and comply with the Factories Act 1948.

Factories must maintain registers including Register of Adult Workers (Form 12), Register of Overtime (Form 15), Register of Accidents (Form 26), Leave Register and Muster Roll, among others.

All shops and commercial establishments must register under the Tamil Nadu Shops and Establishments Act. Registration must be renewed annually.

Penalties vary by Act. Under the Factories Act, violations can attract fines up to Rs. 2 lakh and imprisonment. Under the Contract Labour Act, failure to obtain licence can lead to prosecution.
